Directions to the Riverhead Site


The Riverhead Visitor's Center is located at 416 Griffing Avenue, just north of the railroad tracks. It is accessible by railroad, bus and, automobile.


By Long Island Rail Road: Take the train to the Riverhead station. The museum restoration site is directly across the tracks and across Griffing Avenue from the station. For schedule and fare information, you may call the LIRR at (631) 231-LIRR or visit their web page.


From Western Long Island: Take the Long Island Expressway eastbound to Exit 72, NYS Route 25 East (Main Street). Follow Route 25 approximately three miles. Turn left onto Griffing Avenue and proceed for two blocks. The museum is on the right just over the railroad tracks.


From the North Fork: Take NYS Route 25 through downtown Riverhead. Turn right onto Griffing Avenue and proceed for two blocks. The museum is on the right just over the railroad tracks.


From the South Fork: Follow local roads to the Peconic Avenue traffic circle in Riverhead. Proceed north on Peconic Avenue to Main Street. Turn left for one block and then turn right onto Griffing Avenue and proceed for two blocks. The museum is on the right just over the railroad tracks.


Parking is available on site and the museum building and grounds are handicapped accessible. The rail cars have limited access.


Tour Originating at Riverhead


Arrive at the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI), Riverhead site, at approximately 10 AM when it opens, on any Saturday and Sunday between Memorial weekend and Columbus weekend. Visit the Riverhead site and then walk over to the LIRR Riverhead station (across the tracks) and take the Eastbound 11:22 AM train to Greenport arriving at 12:02 PM. Visit the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI), Greenport site, located across the parking lot from the West end of the Greenport train platform. After visiting you now have two choices. Return to Riverhead on the 1:11 PM train leaving Greenport and arriving Riverhead at 1:50 PM. Or if you want to do additional sightseeing in Greenport Village, return to Riverhead on the 6:11 PM train leaving Greenport and arriving Riverhead at 6:50 PM. (CAUTION, if you plan on returning to Riverhead on the 6:11 PM train, you MUST not park your car inside the RMLI fenced area in Riverhead as the Museum closes about 4 PM and your car would be locked inside). It is suggested when you return on either train, pack a lunch or snack, ride on the upper level of the train, and enjoy the view as you pass through Long Island Wine Country. We have received very good feed back from the family's who have taken the tour, and the kids love the train ride. RMLI admission tickets purchased in Riverhead are good when you visit Greenport on the same day. LIRR train fare is EXTRA, but family fares are low cost.


(CAUTION, if you plan on returning to Riverhead on the 6:11 PM train, you MUST not park your car inside the RMLI fenced area in Riverhead as the Museum closes about 4 PM and your car would be locked inside)

Directions to the Greenport Site


The museum is located just west of the Greenport LIRR station and is accessible by railroad, bus, ferry and by automobile.


By Long Island Rail Road: Take the train to Greenport Station. The museum is directly across from the west end of the train station platform. For schedule and fare information, you may call the LIRR at (631) 231-LIRR or visit their web page.


By Bus: Daily bus service is provided by Sunrise Coach. For schedule and fare information, you may call them at (800) 527-7709.


By Ferry From New London, Connecticut: To get to the museum from New London, take the ferry to Orient Point. For schedule and fare information, and to make reservations (strongly recommended), you may call the Cross Sound Ferry at (631) 323-2525. (You may call (860) 443-5281 from Connecticut.) From the ferry terminal in Orient follow NYS Route 25 through Greenport to Front Street. Turn left onto Fourth Street and go two blocks to the railroad tracks. The museum will be on the left. Parking is available outside of the museum.


By Ferry from Shelter Island: Take the ferry to Greenport; the museum is across the parking lot from the ferry slip. For schedule and fare information, contact the North Ferry Co. at 631-749-0139 or visit their web site.


From Western Long Island: Take the Long Island Expressway to the last exit, Exit 73, County Route 58 east. This route is also known as Old Country Road. Take this route east to the intersection with NYS Route 25. Take Route 25 east. Route 25 is also known as the Main Road. Follow Route 25 east until the Village of Greenport is reached. Greenport is approximately 23 miles east of the end of the Long Island Expressway. Main Road becomes Front Street in Greenport. Make a right turn onto Fourth Street and go two blocks to the railroad tracks. The museum will be on the left. Parking is available outside of the museum.


From the South Fork: Take NYS Route 24 west to the Peconic traffic circle in Riverhead, turn right (north) to NYS Route 25 (Main Street) then turn right (east) and follow Route 25 east to Greenport. Route 25 becomes Front Street in Greenport. Make a right turn onto Fourth Street and go two blocks to the railroad tracks. The museum will be on the left. An alternate route is to take NYS Route 114 to Sag Harbor and take the south ferry to Shelter Island, follow Route 114 (north) and then take the north ferry to Greenport. The museum is across the parking lot from the north ferry terminal. Parking is available outside of the museum.


Tour Originating at Greenport


Arrive at the RMLI, Greenport site, at approximately 12 Noon, on any Saturday or Sunday between Memorial weekend and Columbus weekend. Visit the Greenport site and then walk over to the LIRR Greenport station and take the Westbound 1:11 PM train to Riverhead arriving at 1:50 PM. Visit the RMLI, Riverhead site, located across the tracks from the East end of the Riverhead train platform. Return to Greenport on the 4:22 PM train arriving Greenport at 5:02 PM. This is the ONLY return train to Greenport. It is suggested when you return on the 4:22 PM train, pack a snack, ride on the upper level of the train, and enjoy the view as you pass through Long Island Wine Country. RMLI admission tickets purchased in Greenport are good when you visit Riverhead on the same day. LIRR train fare is EXTRA, but family fares are low cost.

Riverhead to Greenport or Greenport to Riverhead ONLY. Off-peak tickets between these stations are available on the train at no surcharge.


Adult Fare (One-Way Off-Peak) (12 and over): Fare for travel on all weekend off-peak is $3.00. Off-peak tickets between these stations are available on the train at no surcharge or on the web at a reduced price.

 

Seniors and People with Disabilities: The ticket price is $1.50 for individuals 65 years of age or older, as evidenced by a Medicare card, driver’s license, birth certificate, or MTA Reduced-Fare MetroCard presented at time of ticket purchase or use. Tickets between these stations are available on the train at no surcharge. Individuals purchasing a Medicare ticket must present a valid Medicare card issued by the Social Security Administration. People with disabilities are required to present an MTA Reduced-Fare MetroCard as identification at time of ticket purchase.


Child Fare (5–11 years old): Children travel for $1.00; children under 5 years old ride free at all times. Tickets between these stations are available on the train at no surcharge.


Family Fare: Family Fare is available on weekend trains: up to four children 5 to 11 years old ride for the fare of $1.00 each when accompanied by a fare-paying parent or guardian (18 years or older). Purchased on the train, this fare is $1.00. Additional children ride for the child fare of $1.00. Tickets between these stations are available on the train at no surcharge.


We suggest that you pack a lunch or snack, ride on the upper level of the train, and enjoy the view as you pass through Long Island Wine Country.

Admission is $10.00 for adults (13+)

$5.00 for children 5-12 years old

Children under 5 are FREE


The admission charge includes a ride on our World's Fair miniature train and a guided tour of the Riverhead and Greenport sites


Admission tickets are good for both the Riverhead and Greenport sites during the same year stamped on your ticket when purchased.
